Visiting Annecy: The Venice of the Alps

Nestled in the foothills of the French Alps, Annecy is a picturesque town known for its stunning lake, charming canals, and medieval architecture. Often referred to as the "Venice of the Alps," Annecy is a perfect blend of natural beauty and rich history, making it an ideal destination for both nature lovers and culture enthusiasts.

Getting to Annecy

Annecy is located about 40 kilometers (~25 miles) south of Geneva, Switzerland, making it easily accessible by train, car, or even a short flight into Geneva Airport. From Paris, you can take a high-speed TGV train, which reaches Annecy in about four hours, or opt for a scenic drive if you’re exploring the region.

Highlights of Annecy

• Lake Annecy (Lac d'Annecy): One of the cleanest lakes in Europe, Lake Annecy is the crown jewel of the town. Its crystal-clear waters are surrounded by lush mountains, providing opportunities for boating, swimming, and lakeside picnics. In the warmer months, you can rent a paddleboat or take a guided boat tour to fully experience the lake’s beauty.

• Old Town (La Vieille Ville): Stroll through Annecy’s enchanting old town, where cobbled streets are lined with pastel-colored houses, quaint cafes, and boutique shops. The town’s canals wind through this medieval area, creating a magical atmosphere reminiscent of Venice. Don’t miss the **Palais de l’Île**, a historic prison that sits in the middle of a canal, one of the most photographed landmarks in Annecy.

• Château d'Annecy: Overlooking the town is the Château d'Annecy, a 12th-century castle that now houses a museum showcasing regional art, history, and natural sciences. The panoramic views of the town and lake from the castle are breathtaking and well worth the climb.

  
  

• Annecy's Old Town Market: This market is open year-round and is absolutely worth a visit if it fits into your itinerary. The market offers a rich selection of local products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, meats, and baked goods. The market is also known for showcasing regional specialties from the Savoy region, such as charcuterie, honey, and wines. Visitors can explore stalls lined along the charming cobbled streets and enjoy the lively atmosphere, while sampling fresh, high-quality produce and supporting local farmers and artisans. The market is not only a great spot to shop but also an excellent way to immerse yourself in the local culture.

  
  

  • When is it open?

    • Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 7am to 1pm

• Gelato: We went to Le Glacier Des Alpes and it did not disappoint. You can never go wrong with Gelato and this is one of the top places to check out.

• Pont des Amours (Lovers’ Bridge): A romantic spot, this elegant bridge offers fantastic views over both Lake Annecy and the canals below. According to local legend, couples who kiss on the bridge will stay together forever. It’s a popular spot for photos and sunset views.

• Jardins de l’Europe: For a peaceful retreat, visit the Jardins de l’Europe, a beautiful park located on the lake’s edge. Its shaded pathways, sprawling lawns, and towering trees make it a perfect spot for a leisurely walk or a relaxing break from exploring.

Outdoor Adventures

Annecy is not just about its stunning town and lake—it’s also an adventurer’s paradise. Surrounded by mountains, the area is perfect for hiking, cycling, and paragliding. In the summer, hikers can explore nearby trails, such as La Tournette for panoramic views of the lake, or the Semnoz Plateau, a gentle, family-friendly option. Winter visitors can enjoy skiing in the surrounding resorts, like La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand.

Best Time to Visit

Annecy is a year-round destination, with each season offering its own charm. The summer months (June to September) are ideal for enjoying the lake and outdoor activities, with mild weather and vibrant festivals like the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. Autumn brings fewer crowds and stunning fall foliage, while winter offers access to nearby ski resorts. Spring, with its blooming flowers and clear skies, is perfect for hiking and sightseeing.

• Explore by foot or bike: The old town is compact, and many of Annecy’s highlights are within walking distance. For a scenic ride, rent a bike and cycle around Lake Annecy on the Voie Verte, a dedicated cycling path.

• Try local cuisine: Annecy is part of the Savoy region, known for its hearty mountain cuisine. Don’t miss dishes like tartiflette (a potato, bacon, and cheese dish), fondue, and raclette, paired with a glass of local white wine. We were in the mood for some Italian cuisine so we ended up going to Sapaudia which was delicious!

• Plan for water activities: If you visit in the warmer months, set aside time to enjoy the lake—whether it's a swim, a boat ride, or simply relaxing on one of the beaches.
